Bergen Center's Related Student Services

Speech and Language Department

Bergen Center for Child Development is staffed by certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologists. The therapists provide individual and group therapy according to each student’s IEP mandates. We promote and develop functional communications skills through the use of verbal responses and augmentative communication such as language boards and electronic devices. Social communication is emphasized during therapy sessions and in all aspects of the school setting. Bergen Center offers non-mandated services within the classroom to support functional and social communication skills.

Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapist at Bergen Center for Child Development works with all students mandated for OT services. The students work on increasing their overall functioning and independence. Every student has goals which are written to meet his/her individual cognitive level. The areas addressed are as follows:
  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Visual Perceptual ‘Skills
  • Sensory Integration
Occupational Therapy also provides non-mandated services.

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy services are provided by the District Child Study Team and occur during school hours.

Psychological Services and Counseling Services

A psychologist and social worker meet with the students individually and in a small groups to optimize students' well being. Families are constantly updated and included in these services when necessary.

The Reading Program

Our Wilson Trained Reading Specialist assesses students’ language abilities and learning styles in her evaluation to assist the teachers in providing the students with appropriate reading goals.

This positive approach celebrates each child’s individuality.
